Donating time for a good cause is nothing out of the ordinary for Betty Parker

For the last 40 years, Mrs Parker has been a volunteer for Wyndham’s Meals on Wheels, a service that provides meals for eligible residents to support them to continue living independently in their own home.

Mrs Parker started delivering meals with her mother in 1980, who volunteered for Red Cross, a number of Church organisations and what is today, Baptcare.

Mrs Parker’s father was also active in the Wyndham community, working on the hospital board.

Mrs Parker has been recognised for her community contribution before and in 2010 was awarded Citizen of the Year by Wyndham City. She was nominated for her tireless community work for a number of programs and initiatives.

Mrs Parker considers the social factors as her reason to volunteer.

“I can enjoy people’s company and go and help them, whether it be at the Op Shop, Meals on Wheels or at the craft festival”

“It means that I can enjoy people’s company and go and help them, whether it be at the Op Shop, Meals on Wheels or at the craft festival,” Mrs Parker said.

“I think it’s nice to give back to other people. It’s nice to help people and you’re helping yourself by being out and about.”

“Volunteering is giving back to your community in some way.”

“You can only do volunteering when you’ve got a good husband who puts up with you going out and about all the time.”

“It’s important to have a partner to help share the load.”

Active City Portfolio Holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said Mrs Parker’s contribution demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the community and encouraged residents to try volunteering.

“Wyndham has a wide variety of volunteering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.”

“Volunteering enables social connection and is a way to feel a part of the community.”

“We encourage others to consider seeking out volunteering opportunities like Betty to better connect with one another and be engaged in Wyndham life.”

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
