150 performers, 12 film screenings…SSCAFF was an explosion of culture

More than 150 participants and performers from Indian, Nepal, Greek, Spanish, Pakistan, Italy, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and the Fiji Islands, an audience of more than 1000, 12 film screenings, percussion healing sessions, wellbeing workshops… festival director Noel Nawal Moudgil says the 2019 SSCAFF was bigger than ever.

In its seventh year, and presented by SKGA Inc in association with VMC Victorian Multicultural Commission, City of Monash, City of Kingston, State Govt of Victoria and Cinespace Inc, the participations from Australian Films, and Creative Arts & Performing Arts, the Yash Chopra SSCAFF Awards, Film—Talks & Screening, Performances involving music, drumming, dancing, fashion show and stand-up acts is a much awaited annual event.

The Satrangi Seven Colours Arts & Film Festival is the culmination of SKGA Inc. and its continuing efforts to promote cultural diversity through the platform of creative arts, performing arts and filmmaking.

“The festival is a melting pot of cultures, with people and groups hailing from regions all over the globe coming together to take part in the program. It is a weekend devoted to spreading intercultural awareness and community harmony,” says Moudgil.

“The Festival is dedicated to our patron, Indian Cinema Legend, the Late Yash Raj Chopra, to commemorate his love for Australia and its community,” he says. The film panelists this year include John Hipwell, Winston Furlong, Amy Perera, Lin Arrifin, Daniel Schultheis, and David Black. The filmmakers are Navneet Choujar, Daniel Schultheis, Vamshidhar Parepalli, Lin Ariffin, Chandra Shekhar Shitole, John Hipwell, Sameer Borkar, Vivek Kumar, Winston Furlong, and Yusuf Abbas.

The Festival in collaboration with Victorian Multicultural Commission, City of Monash, City of Kingston, NMFI FILM AUSTRALIA, was kickstarted on 28 June with yoga, arts, music and dance Sessions at various locations in Victoria.

Indigenous, Indian and cross-cultural participation from diverse cultures, film talks and workshops will be held, as local filmmakers and members in the Australian film community engage in discourse surrounding multiculturalism, diversity and representation in the Australian film industry.

Following the film panel discussion, a series of short films and trailers of short films, created by local aspiring filmmakers will be on full display, providing them with the opportunity to play their films for an audience. They will be invited to engage in a Q & A about their films, while recognising their cast & crew, in the effort to motivate them to promote the social, cultural and economic benefits of cultural diversity through their film and arts projects.

The program includes music and dance from India, Australia, Africa, Spain, Nepal, Bangla Desh, South east Asia, Greece, China and many more regions and countries. This all-inclusive platform aims to showcase the power of multiculturalism in Australia, through the bright and colourful dances, and the melodic music being sung in various languages. Singers include Abhishek Ayer, Nandini Venkataraman, Aman Kalyan, and Karan Kalyan.

SKGA Incorporated—Sangam Kala Group Australia—is an independent, incorporated not-for-profit association formed in 2002, which aims to preserve and promote Indian and diverse music, dance, film, languages, drama and related performing arts.
