Wyndham City Council has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Local Government—Schools and Early Years category in this year’s HART (Helping Achieve Reconciliation Together) Awards for two separate projects.

Co-Chair of the Wyndham Reconciliation Advisory Committee, Cr Henry Barlow, welcomed the news saying he was proud to see the how the community has embraced reconciliation.

“Wyndham City Kindergartens has been actively working on reconciliation by developing and implementing Reconciliation Action Plans through the Narragunnawali program—which encourages wellbeing, coming together and peace—at each location,” Cr Barlow said.

The awards ceremony will be held on Friday, 31 May from 12.30pm to 3pm, at the Korin Gamadjti Institute, Punt Road, Richmond

“With the support of traditional owners and elders from the Kulin Nations people, 230 educators continue to address the complexity of reconciliation with a fierce determination for the First Peoples to be recognised. This work has been welcomed by over 3,000 children and their families in Wyndham, each year, with Aboriginal perspectives continuing to be at the forefront of program and practice,” he said.

The Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre and Integrated Family Centre (WACC/IFC), which will open its doors in September this year, was also shortlisted for an award, Cr Barlow said. The Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre (meaning strong heart) is supported by an Aboriginal-led partnership governance and operational model.

The WACC/IFC comprises three components to meet diverse community needs; an Integrated Family Centre, Neighbourhood Community Centre, and a dedicated Aboriginal Community Centre.

“The centre which will become the heart of Wyndham’s Aboriginal community and the heart of the local Wyndham Vale neighbourhood is a tangible expression of Council’s commitment to reconciliation,” Cr Barlow said.

The awards ceremony will be held on Friday, 31 May from 12.30pm to 3pm, at the Korin Gamadjti Institute, Punt Road, Richmond.
