Celebrating Wyndham’s diversity

Wyndham City and community organisations will hold more than 15 free events throughout Wyndham to help celebrate Cultural Diversity Week from Saturday 17 March to Sunday 25 March.

Held annually in March to coincide with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Harmony on 21 March, Cultural Diversity Week is Victoria’s largest multicultural celebration.

Wyndham City’s Cultural Diversity portfolio holder, Cr Henry Barlow, said a range of Council and community led programs would be held in Wyndham.

“Wyndham is a proudly multicultural City that is made up of people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe. Our residents come from 120 different countries and they speak at least 52 different languages and dialects,” Cr Barlow said, adding that this was why an occasion like Cultural Diversity Week is so important. “It gives us a chance to celebrate the things that make us all unique and the common threads that unite us. As the son of Greek and British immigrants, I’m proud to be able to see so many positive events celebrating Wyndham’s diversity,” he added.

From learning how to cook the perfect Italian meatballs and Maltese Easter sweets, to a bilingual story time for pre-schoolers at local libraries and Chinese lantern making for adults, the festival promises something for everyone.

“A highlight of this year’s celebrations will be a Multicultural Fiesta showcasing our diversity. Hosted by Wyndham City in partnership with the Wyndham Humanitarian Network Group, entertainment will include the Sudanese Dancers, the Brumbies Bush Band, food from around the world, a craft bazaar, hands-on workshops and henna painting,” he said.

The Werribee Softball Association will also be running a come and try softball session on 22 March, with all ages, cultures, genders and abilities welcome. A free halal barbeque will also be provided to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week.

“This is a great chance to broaden your horizons, meet your neighbours and enjoy heaps of fun and informative activities. Be sure to come along,” said Cr Barlow.
