A special community celebration will be held to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay to Wyndham in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and you’re invited!
The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Wyndham on Tuesday, 13 February as the Baton journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony on 4 April.
The Queen’s Baton will depart from Werribee Primary School at 9.26am, travelling South along Wedge St. It will eventually reach Watton St, where residents are encouraged to line the street and cheer on the local legends carrying the Baton.
The event will conclude at Chirnside Park for a celebration from 9am to 10.30am.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Peter Maynard, encouraged residents to get involved in the day.
“This is a unique opportunity to be involved in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games and to celebrate some local heroes,” Cr Maynard said.
Cr Maynard has encouraged everyone to be a part of this historic day. “Kids of all ages will be able to participate in free athletic games and activities at Chirnside Park, and then form a human corridor to welcome the Baton,” he said.
“Not only will we be celebrating the Baton’s arrival to Wyndham, the day will also be an opportunity for kids to try out new sports, gain some skills and have fun,” Cr Maynard said.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:
• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers
We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
Please consider making a contribution today.
Thank you for your support.
