‘Mompreneur’—defined as “a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur”—seems to be the new buzz word in the business world.

These mompreneurs or mumpreneurs, however one chooses to address them, have added another dimension to the fabric of business strategies. They are business analysts, financial managers and PR professionals all rolled in one. There were times, when the general norm was that women liked familiarity and were reticent and awkward stepping outside the comfort zone… Well, those are days of the past!

Indian Mumpreneurs is an enterprising and socially active group in Sydney initiated by Shipra Tewani. These mums don’t let restrictions tie them down, but manoeuvre their weekdays and weekends to ensure everyone and everything is catered for. At this juncture, it is also important to mention that most of these ladies are married to men who are supportive and encouraging.

After their initial venture at the RSL in Castle Hill, the Mumpreneurs of Sydney took it a notch higher this time with the Artisan’s House Spring Market which was held on 17 September at the Parravilla Function Centre in Parramatta. A collective effort of Deepa Das Gupta, Mahalakshmi, Mansi Bhatia, Meena Mahanty Kumar, Pritika Minocha and Shipra Tewani, this market had nearly 30 ‘mummy entrepreneurs’ participating. A great platform was created and the day was very well executed. The air buzzed with excitement as people interacted and shopped, meeting and greeting old acquaintances and making some new ones.

It was an excellent afternoon for social activity and retail therapy. The stalls covered everything from jewellery to clothing both ethnic, modern and bohemian, from mehndi to make up to skin care products, from candles to home décor and bags and shawls. The stalls also included Tarot reading, information on speech therapy services, event planning and a couple of e-commerce ventures. The options were myriad and the shoppers were spoilt for choice on every front, for each mumpreneur had goods that were beautiful and individualistic. The afternoon was peppered with some dance performances and Bingo designed by Vin’s Creations. While the Mumpreneurs gave Fox G1 Foundation an avenue to fund raise during the first market with gold coin donations from the shoppers, this time it was the Harman Foundation. Julie Owens, Federal Member for Parramatta, Councillors Reena Jethi and Sameer Pandey visited the market and lauded the efforts of the organisers and participants. Congratulations to all Mumpreneurs! Keep moving… onwards and upwards!
