Yatra’s Bollywood night raises $80,000 AUD to educate rural children in India

Yatra Foundation’s annual Bollywood fundraiser, held at St. Kilda town hall on Friday, 4 August, proved to be the hottest ticket in town on the year’s coldest night.

Yatra Bollywood Extravaganza 2017 attracted a vibrant, noisy, and wonderful crowd of 340 generous supporters (yatris) who revelled in the food, music, colour, and camaraderie of the evening.

There was a special vibe in the air, reflected by the warmth and generosity of all those who attended to have fun as well as learn more about the work of our Foundation, now entering its tenth year!

Yatra Foundation Australia, established in 2007, offers opportunity through quality education to the poorest children in India to assist them escape the vicious cycle of poverty. The organisation supports 1,200 children in diverse settings where the common theme is that of quality and accessible education.

The food for the evening, prepared by Gaylord’s restaurant, was delicious, with great entertainment provided by Sam Goraya (Odhisi dance), Ignite Bollywood dancers, and DJ Aji. The MC for the evening, Natasha Margaritis and IT guru Cassie Nixon ensured the night went smoothly. Long-time Yatra supporter and director of the movie Lion, Garth Davis, spoke at the event about how opportunity and education can transform lives.

Through the amazing generosity of all who attended, the Foundation raised $80,000AUD (after expenses) that will continue to sustain and enrich various projects in India. Yatra Foundation Australia has now raised over $1 million towards projects with the aim of sustainable, quality, and accessible education delivered effectively to the poorest children across India.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
