Amit Tandon serves up satire with a straight face
Amit Tandon’s stand-up comedy gig in Adelaide on 22 July was a win-win for everyone present. The audience at the Parks Recreation and Sports centre in South Australia was thoroughly entertained by the sharpest wit in show business. And the late addition of an additional afternoon show was a bonus for the Adelaidians.
The ‘most hilarious show of the year’, organised under the banner of Heart and Soul Production by Arun Nanda, Rishi Dave and Umesh Nagasandra left the audience ‘hammered’.

Talking to The Indian Sun team before the show, Arun and Rishi revealed that Amit Tandon had been shocking comedy fans across Australia for his ‘Z Tour’ by pulling in a couple of secret gigs that he picked in Australia itself. “Amit Tandon is one of those performers whose charm—and he has lots of it—resides in his ability to make you feel you’re in the company of a close friend and him regaling you with hilarious stories of how screwy his life is,” said Rishi. “You leaving with a feeling of relief that your own life is just slightly less of a mess than that,” said Arun.
Any stand-up comedian essentially plays a caricatured version of themselves on stage—Amit took that concept to new heights of exaggeration on ‘just’ being himself, and serving up satire with a straight face.
Amit had the crowd in splits merely by asking for the married men in the house. His interaction with the audience and his comic timing had a flavour of both rapid speech and movement. His dramatic pauses were ‘rhythmically’ spontaneous that the moment one finish a sentence, he would spread his wings wide open—finding humour in the mundane. And this is just the right visual treat that provides an additional window into Amit Tandon’s strain of comedic madness, a demented sensibility heightened by the special’s elaborate set and the comedian’s alternately giddy and incredulous expressions.
Amit’s satirical jabs had hysterical impact, thanks to his insistence on pushing several steps beyond the obvious observation. Anyone can point out the stupidity of a teenager scrawling anarchy symbols—only Amit can emphasise his remarks with specific tenets of anarchy that flew over the head of his audience—absolutely bringing the house down.
