An International Women’s Day event helped raise funds for a charitable organisation in India
Bright lights, soft music and the aroma of Indian cuisine. The ambience was set at Ghazal Restaurant in Werribee on 13 March where Nandini Biskunda hosted yet another spectacular International Women’s Day celebration.
Lakshmi Nookala addressed the audience and welcomed them to the get-together that celebrated womanhood. She spoke about the history of women’s day and the empowerment of today’s women. The event was organised by MTF ladies wing spearheaded by Lakshmi along with Nandini Biskunda, Prashanthi Touti Reddy, Chandana, Sravanti Vemula and Vani Reddy.
Special guests for the evening—Monica Raizada, President of WOW Organisation, and Neetu Babani, who supports many organisations in Melbourne—were honoured as President of TWAA Vani Bairy, JET Australia’s Chandana Rao Polasani, Executive committee member-TAAI Sumitra Kalyan, and AMA team member Geeta Pasupulate attended. Sponsors included Premlatha Duduka, WAITE Group of companies for finance, property, development and Neetu Babani, for the Indian clothes and jewellery in Melbourne.
From 2015, Nandini’s idea was to celebrate on International Women’s day, and what better way than to honour those who work hard for empowerment.
This year, the group honoured Monica Raizada, a counsellor and mentor for women in need, and Neetu Babani, who supports many organisations in cultural activities. The women were handed shawls and token mementos in keeping with Indian tradition.
Living in Melbourne, Nandini is still strongly attached to her culture and community and is always finding ways to assimilate that in her activities. She initiated and introduced the Serve Needy organisation, which has nine ongoing projects that includes free last rites for unclaimed dead bodies, an old age home, pothole fixing, and free medical services for the poor.
“I hope these efforts inspired others to help those in need,” said Nandini, as she explained her work through a beautiful powerpoint presentation that touched the hearts of those gathered.
There were over 50 beautiful and strong women who have graciously attended the event and opened their hearts and wallets for the greater good and donated generously.
A total of $700 AUD was raised on this memorable day which aided the ‘Serve Needy’ organisation based in Hyderabad, India.
