Master of the Mohan Veena, Grammy Award-winner Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt will be in Melbourne on 31 March to perform in a concert hosted by Multicultural Arts Victoria
For the past 40 years, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt has been hugely influential in presenting his instrument, the Mohan Veena on the world stage, as well as bringing it to new audiences throughout India. The Mohan Veena is an Indian adaption of the Hawaiian guitar, incorporating elements of the traditional sitar, sarod and veena.
Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt has worked in several films including Lagaan (2001), Saathiya (2002), Dedh Ishqiya (2014) and 7 Khoon Maaf (2011) and toured with composer, AR Rahman. But it was his Grammy-award winning album, A Meeting by the River with Ry Cooder, that made him a household name worldwide.
The Government of Indian has also recently awarded Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt with one of the nation’s highest civilian honours, the Padma Bhushan, for his “distinguished service of a high order”.
Performing with Pt. Bhatt on 31 March is Melbourne-based musician Jay Dabgar on tabla. Dabgar was born into a family of tabla makers, learning the instrument from 18 years of age from his Gurus, the Late Pt. Nandan Mehta and Pt. Pooran Maharaj at the famous Saptak School of Music in India. Dabgar’s skills are well known throughout Australia and he has accompanied many great internationals here and overseas.
The concert is being presented by Arts Multicultural Arts Victoria and City of Port Phillip as part of the Emerald Hill Arts Menu 2017 with the assistance of Creative Victoria and the Australia Council for the Arts.
