The latest Kapoor to strike big in Bollywood, only this time it’s behind the scenes. Kanika tells Hello Bollywood about how she got here

Out of a bunch of newcomers that keep trying their luck in Bollywood, every now and then comes one who manages to get a hit debut. And that’s what’s happened with singer KanikaKapoor.

At 29, KanikaKapoor, who is from Lucknow, has modeled for Italian designers, Emilio Pucci, Moschino, Amrapali, Alberta Ferretti, Louis Vuitton and Karl Lagerfeld. She has also sung the chartbuster Baby Doll in Ragini MMS 2, which was picturised on actress Sunny Leone, which was her ticket to Bollywood. Recording at home in a small studio setup when she was a child, Kanika says singing comes naturally to her.

She has now become a voice to reckon with after working with Vishal and Shekhar in director Farah Khan’s recent hit Happy New Year.

Kapoor says she is now working on Manish Jha’s The Legend of Michael Mishra, Leela to and collaborating with an Arab artiste.

Were you always into music?

I grew up in Lucknow and learnt music there from the age of 6. We had a studio at home so that really improved my singing. I did my masters/ visharad in music. I began singing for All India Radio at the age of 11. It’s taken me 15 years to break it into Bollywood!

Who or what kind of music inspires you?

I listen to different kinds of music. A lot of singers from different genres have inspired me.

You do you manage your personal and professional life?

I have discipline and have learned how to balance my work and personal life!

You have spent a lot of time in London. How did you stay rooted to India and its people? Was Bollywood always on your mind?

I have spent half my life in London but this is home for me. I have a lot of close family and friends in India and I travel a lot. Bollywood was always on my mind and I have been working towards it for a long time.

Even though it was Baby Doll that made your mark in the industry, you became known because of JugniJi, an independent collaboration between you and Dr Zeus. How did that happen?

Dr Zeus and I met through a friend in London sometime in 2012 and we decided to work together. JugniJi happened while we were recording my album.

You have also sung two tracks from ‘Happy New Year’ movie, how does it feel to reach such height in the industry?

It’s a great feeling but comes with pressure to sustain myself in this industry. I don’t want to be a two-song wonder.

First Sunny Leone and now Shahrukh Khan and DeepikaPadukone. You have given voices to such big stars. Do you consider yourself lucky to be in such a space?

Yes I think I have been very fortunate. I am thankful to God.

Why did you give up modelling?

I will take get into it again. It is just that I am concentrating on music now.

Keeping music aside, have you were thought of getting into acting?

Haven’t thought about it… yet.

What next?

I have a lot of new music coming out soon. I have sung for the movie Leela, Roy, and The Legend of Michael Mishra. There are some singles in the pipeline too.
