Youtube India has removed the ‘You Never Lamb Alone’ advert by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA in India), after requests from the Indian government.

A message on the video now reads, “this content is not on this country domain due to a legal complaint from the government”.

Aiming to position lamb as the meat more people can eat, the video advertisement titled ‘You Never Lamb Alone’ and released by MLA featured Lord Ganesha along with other religious figures ‘toasting lamb’, which the Indian community consider to be offensive and hurting their religious sentiments.

Taking note of the protests of the Indian community in Australia, the High Commission of India, Canberra, made a demarche to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Department of Communication and Arts and Department of Agriculture about the ad. The Consulate General of India in Sydney has taken up the matter directly with MLA and urged them to withdraw the advertisement. A number of community associations in Australia too have registered their protest with the Government of Australia and MLA.

Recently, Indian hair salon owner Jawed Habib was charged for ads featuring Hindu Goddess Durga. Previously, Australian fashion label Soulan Zee and Etsy were criticised for their use of Hindu Gods in ads.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.
