Wyndham City has joined forces with two major property developers in a bid to create tidy tradies, helping to eliminate litter on building sites.

Thanks to funding from Sustainability Victoria’s Litter Innovation Fund, Wyndham City has developed a trial to tackle building site litter.

Wyndham City’s Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said if successful the new trial could be adopted by other Councils and developers.

“One of the impacts of this has been an increase in litter, such as the wrappers from builder’s lunches and snacks. This litter is difficult to contain and has been found to blow away and end up in local waterways, creeks and grasslands”

“Wyndham is one of Australia’s fasting growing municipalities, and because of this new housing developments have become an extremely common thing in this area,” Cr Marcus said.

“One of the impacts of this has been an increase in litter, such as the wrappers from builder’s lunches and snacks. This litter is difficult to contain and has been found to blow away and end up in local waterways, creeks and grasslands,” she added.

“Building site litter has been continually reported throughout Wyndham. This problem not only damages our local environment, it impacts the visual amenity of our communities,” she said, adding that Wolfdene, the developer of the Saratoga estate in Point Cook and Lendlease, the developer of the Harpley estate in Wyndham Vale, had both signed up to take part in the trial.

“They will now spend six weeks becoming ‘clean sites’, which includes agreeing to contain rubbish, undertake regular litter sweeps and dispose of lunch rubbish properly,” she said, adding that this trial is a Victorian-first and if successful could be used as a model for the building industry and other Councils.

The Building a Cleaner Wyndham trial will run from September to late October, with the results being evaluated in November.
