Two Victorian school students celebrated 23 July after winning the Victorian Coalition Government and Australian Football League (AFL) competition One Team, One Goal – Celebrating Diversity.
Minister for Education Martin Dixon, Minister for Sport and Recreation Damian Drum and AFL Victoria General Manager Grant Williams presented Montmorency South Primary School’s Tyalla Kellam and MacKillop Catholic
Regional College’s Samantha Wainwright with their prizes at a ceremony at Parliament House.
“The competition challenged Victorian students to produce a poster or logo on the themes of multiculturalism, diversity and teamwork,” Mr Dixon said.
He said that the 750 entries displayed remarkable depth and thought, and it was clear that the competition led to thousands of classroom discussions about the value of multiculturalism. “Tyalla’s poster is a powerful demonstration of how football showcases the very best of multiculturalism, and Samantha’s logo perfectly captures the spirit of One Team, One Goal,” Mr Dixon said. Samantha’s logo has been printed on limited edition AFL Sherrin footballs and Tyalla’s poster will be featured in the AFL’s Football Record during the Multicultural Round.
The winning students received $5,000 grants for their schools to run activities which build intercultural understanding, a football clinic with an AFL Australia Post Multicultural Ambassador, 50 tickets to an AFL
match during Multicultural Round and 10 limited edition One Team, One Goal Sherrin footballs.
“The Napthine Government is proud to be partnering with the AFL to educate all Victorians about multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion – on the field and in the classroom,” Mr Drum said.
AFL Victoria General Manager Grant Williams said it was fitting to be announcing the winners of the competition during the AFL’s Multicultural Round.
“The theme for our Multicultural Round is Many Cultures, One Game, and it is a time when the AFL encourages all levels of Australian football to celebrate the great cultural diversity that exists in the game, which
closely aligns to the theme of this competition,” he added.
“The competition has clearly been successful in encouraging many young students to think and talk about multiculturalism, with the different posters and logos produced also serving as a visual reminder of the
importance of diversity and inclusion,” said Mr Williams.
