Jags Premier League kicks off tourno for Wyndham’s South Asian residents

While the whole world has stepped into a sporting mood with the World Cup football that has kicked off in Brazil, cricket fans are keen on the World Cup Cricket 2015 to be played in Australia. Prior to this much-awaited tournament, Wyndham Jags Cricket Club, a cricket club registered with Cricket Victoria formed in the western suburbs of Melbourne, is hosting a premier league involving the South Asian community in Victoria.

Wyndham Jags was established in 2013 by a group of Malayalee (people belonging to Kerala, a southern state of India) friends in Tarneit, a western suburb of Melbourne, to encourage Wyndham residents to participate in sporting activities.Considering the club’s dedication to cricket, Cricket Victoria provided Jags with a ground and a club-house at Laverton last year.

The Club is now organising Jags Premier League (JPL) with the support of Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the International Cricket Council. The tournament that got started on 25 May involves 16 teams from around Melbourne, most with members from the South Asian community. This can be regarded as the biggest tournament in Victoria involving local communities and groups from different backgrounds conducting prior to World Cup Cricket 2015.

Prizes, say the organisers, will be distributed at a grand finale scheduled for 19 July at the Lawrie Emmins Reserve in Laverton. The finale night will be held at Suzanne Corey High School Theatre, Werribee, with a number of special invitees including the Mayor, Council Officers and a current Australian cricketer. There will also be a music concert.

JPL is structured with the view of having a tournament every year running for two months.

With the intention of leading kids into sporting activities and providing them with an opportunity to learn the basics of cricket, Jags also organises

Milo Cricket and Junior kids programs every Sunday. The club also organises social cricket matches every Sunday at the Werribee Recreation Ground, with membership being open to all Wyndham residents.
