Congress Party Spokeswoman holds forth about the challenges ahead for the Indian economy after demonetisation

Indian politician and National Spokesperson of the Congress Party Priyanka Chaturvedi visited Melbourne on an invitation from former ministerial adviser Nitin Gupta, and delivered a talk on “Challenges for Indian economy post-demonetisation” to members of the Australian Indian community on 14 February.

A meet and greet event was also organised at the scenic “Roof Top” of the Western Institute of Technology, South Melbourne, for the Australian Indian community and business leaders to interact with Ms Chaturvedi, who shared her own experiences of demonetisation, including  standing in long ATM queues to withdraw money. She said that she got feedback on the issue of demonetisation by meeting various stakeholders across the country, and also gave examples of how various sectors of the Indian economy were suffering due to poor implementation of demonetisation.

She also answered questions on handling “online trolling”, which women in Indian politics face.

The meet and greet event was supported by Australia India Business Council (AIBC Victoria), BYSQ, SOLD Real Estate, IAEF and AIFI. The venue, and dinner following the talk were sponsored by WIT.

The MCs for event were Dheepa Awtani (AFL & Cricket Australia ambassador), and Rashi Kapoor (National Finalist—Miss World Australia and AFL Focus group member). Prominent Victorian Indians such as Cr Intaj Khan (City of Wyndham), Roshni Sharma and Darpan Mittal (AIBC), Line Producer Nithya Remesan (Natya Bollywood), Tripti Gupta (Gurukul), Tanvi Mor (ACHRH), Viv Prasad (Budgetary Officer—Victorian Parliament), Manjit Singh (Sant Nirankari Mission), and various others attended the event. Australian businessman Lachlan Wilson from the TFS Corporation (Indian Sandalwood Plantations) and Sri Lankan Community leader Mr Pasan De Silva were also present to hear the demonetisation address.

Around 80 people attended the meet and greet event, including nearly 40 members of AIBC Victoria, with many in the audience stating that they had cancelled their Valentine’s Day dinner plans to be able to listen to Ms Chaturvedi’s address.

During her Melbourne stay, Ms Chaturvedi also visited Australia’s oldest Hindu Temple—the ISKCON temple (Albert Park), took a tour of the Richmond Tigers Footy Club, had a meeting with former Victorian Premier Hon. Ted Baillieu at the Old Treasury Building, paid a visit to the Gold Museum to learn about Victoria’s gold legacy, and had lunch in Narre Warren with some Building industry stakeholders from Australian Indian community.

She also spent a lot of time in the marginal areas of Cranbourne, Noble Park and Mulgrave as well. Rather than staying in the CBD, she choose to stay at Cranbourne North to be able to interact more with the Australian Indian community, and get a better political understanding of Victoria.
