Indians in Australia
With the number of Australian residents born in India tripling in the last decade, Indians are the fourth largest migrant group in the country after the UK, New Zealand and China.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, as on 30 June 2015, there were 432,700 Australian residents who were born in India, which 1.8 percent of the total population of Australia. According to the ABS data, foreign migrants make up the highest proportion of Australian population in over a century, at 28%.
The median age of Indian migrants has also dropped from 37 years in 2005 to 33.4 years in 2015, which means more younger people are migrating from India.
The percentage of Australian residents born overseas has increased every year for the last 15 years. The change in the migrant mix can best be observed in the differences in median age of certain groups.
At a state level, the largest gains were in New South Wales, followed by Victoria and then Queensland.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
