…as big name elite snowboarders arrive for Australian SBX Championship
The big names in Australian elite snowboarding will be at Mt Hotham competing against each other and coaching the next wave of up and coming talent as part of the Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) SBX Futures training program and Australia New Zealand Cup (ANC) FIS SBX Races during 3-7 August 2016.
The elite athletes include Hotham’s own Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin (2 x World Champion/ 2 x Olympian), Belle Brockhoff (World Cup Winner, 2014 Olympian), Cameron Bolton (2014 Olympian), Jarryd Hughes (X-Games Gold Medallist) as well as NSWIS athletes Matt Thomas, Georgia Baff, Adam Dickson, Adam Lambert, Ellise Turner and Alex Dickson.
The ANC FIS SBX event is a major drawcard event on Mt Hotham’s and the Southern Hemisphere winter calendar that attracts the top snowboard cross riders in the region and helps younger up and coming talent increase their FIS points for world rankings.
“Mt Hotham really is perfect for snowboard cross riders. With a fast and technical track setup for training and racing, plus the large amount of terrain for freeriding, Hotham has everything we need,” said Pullin, pictured riding in the great conditions at Mt Hotham this week.
Pullin has won back to back ANC FIS SBX titles in previous years and is looking to repeat the same success in 2016 after he performs his coaching and mentoring role as part of the SSA SBX Futures training program.
The SSA SBX Futures training program is a two day Snowboard X training program held in the days leading up to the ANC FIS SBX event that aims to identify potential talent and provide opportunities for them to train alongside Olympic Winter Institute and NSW Institute of Sport athletes, introducing them to ‘what it takes’ to become an elite athlete.
“The FIS ANC events are great for me to race in the off season from the World Cup Tour, test new equipment but I also enjoy watching all the future snowboard cross champs get in a race too,” Pullin said. “The SSA Futures camp is a big part of the week and it’s so great to see it growing every year. It’s cool to have the opportunity to train the younger riders coming up and share our excitement for snowboarding and racing. It’s my favourite week of the Southern winter.”
