Labor promises more support for international students. Daniel Andrews offer $50,000 for international student organisations

Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Daniel Andrews has announced that the Labor Government will assist international students in need: help those who are facing welfare issues including social isolation, consumer affairs, housing and issues with the quality of education.

Grants of up to $50,000 will be available to international student organisations including representative student bodies. Organisations receiving grants will be required to meet strict accountability standards, to ensure grants benefit international students.

As educational services are the number one export industry in Victoria and a very significant part of the state’s economy, Labor’s $4 million plan will enhance student experience and lift the attractiveness of Victoria as an education destination.

“Labor is committed to giving international students a helping hand because it is both the right thing to do and the economically smart thing to do,” said Mr Andrews.

It is estimated that over 30,000 full time equivalent Victorian jobs are created by the presence of international students. Victoria has experienced a decline in on-shore international student numbers since 2010. Victoria’s share of global higher education enrolments has fallen from around 2.0 per cent in 2009 to 1.5 per cent in 2012.

We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution.
