Knocking on doors to save lives

Salvation Army’s weekend Red Shield Doorknock campaign hopes to fund volunteer organisation’s initiatives

Be it a victim of domestic violence, a drought affected farmer, a disconnected teenager or a bushfire ravaged family –Salvation Army workers are always there to hold their hand and give them the assurance that is vital during these vulnerable times. They harness support in times of crisis, and give people a chance to get back on their feet. They endeavour to help people break away from the cycle of poverty, addiction, loneliness and/or fear. They are there to bring about real and lasting change and a glimmer of hope into the lives of those who are most isolated.

Every year through the Red Shield Doorknock to multicultural communities, the Salvation Army raises significant funds to fuel their various initiatives. This year too they hope to do the same and reach the 2016 national fundraising target of $74 million. This annual Red Shield Appeal culminated with the Doorknock weekend on 28-29 May.

Minister for Regional Development Senator Hon. Fiona Nash launched this year’s event and was joined by Salvation Army Territorial Multicultural Coordinator Captain Nesan Kistan, who said the Salvation Army would not be able to maintain its strong presence in multicultural communities without the support of the Australian public, who volunteer their time and give generously to the Red Shield Doorknock. “The funds raised from the Red Shield Doorknock ensure the Salvation Army can continue to develop and empower local communities that are in need of extra support,” he added.

“The Salvation Army is an army for everyone, from everywhere. From every religion and every background. This army has no geographical, social or religious boundaries and their mission is to help and that they do. Thank God for the Salvos,” said Mr. Joseph Assaf, Chairman of Ethnic Business Awards, who has been a staunch supporter and driver to garner support for The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal for over 20 years.

This year, once again MultiConnexions partnered with The Salvation Army as the sponsor of this event. MultiConnexions CEO Sheba Nandkeolyar is proud of the longstanding relationship they have built with the Salvation Army to support its work across Australia.

“The Salvation Army provides hope where it is needed most. But it’s only through the support of the generous Australian public that the Salvation Army is able to sustain their services and support to Aussies down on their luck,” she said.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
