Head, Australian Multicultural Organisation

A graduate in Electronics & Communication, Gurninder Singh worked in Reliance Telecommunication for several years before moving to Australia in 2007.

He got a job with Metro Trains Melbourne soon after reaching Australia and has been with them since.

But despite his busy schedule with Metro, Gurninder reserves a major chunk of his spare time for community service. Apart from being a member in several community forums such as the Sikh Cultural Society of Victoria and the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria, he heads the Australian Multicultural Organisation, which works towards bringing diverse communities together. “We address general community problems, as well as guide new migrants and overseas students so they find it easier to settle in. The services are open to all communities,” says Gurninder. “We also offer funding required to run such community programs, which can in the long run, also improve Victoria’s image,” he adds.

Gurinder’s wife is a childcare assistant with Goodstart Learning Centre, and like her husband, believes in community service. In 2009, she began a free language class at the Sikh Cultural Society of Victoria, Craigieburn, which has now grown to 150 students.

In 2014, Gurninder formed the SCFOL Vic, aligned with umbrella organisation SFOL NSW, which hopes to raise awareness within the sub-continent community about the Australian political process. “We want the organization to be the bridge between Sub-continent communities and the Australian Labor Party,” says Gurninder, who hopes the new initiative will help create future leaders at local, state and federal levels.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
