Daniel Andrews’ decision to permanently close the Heidelberg West Police Station will be a shock to the local community, said Edward O’Donnahue, shadow minister for police.

The Heidelberg West Police Station had served the local community for decades until it was closed by the Brumby Government. “With crime up in Heidelberg West (postcode 3081) by 14.6 per cent under Daniel Andrews and population rising, the police station should be retained for future police use,” said O’ Donnahue, adding that despite a crime increase of 11.8 per cent in the Banyule Police Service Area, there has been cut to police numbers of -5.90 FTE officers since Daniel Andrews was elected.

“This decision from Daniel Andrews is yet another example that he simply doesn’t understand the desire of the community to see their police stations open, engaged with the community and helping to improve community safety,” he said. “Under Daniel Andrews, despite the crime tsunami, police stations have either been closed or had their opening hours cut while the number of police per capita continues to go backwards.”

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
