Bollywood in Melbourne

The first ever musical venture by Heart and Soul Events was a night to remember. The singers tackled various genres of music from different eras in Bollywood history with élan. The mood was one of fun, the air lively and peppy. Jaspreet Grover set the tone to the entire evening with the opening number ‘Tu Na Jaane Aas Paas Hain Khuda…’ wooing the audience with his voice and his very ‘gusto’ stage presence. Shailja Chandra, the emcee for the event, carried the evening forward with grace and panache. The ultimate treat of the evening was a couple of impromptu numbers by Srijani Dan, an extremely talented singer with a unique voice quality. She gave some valuable insight into the work of music directors of yesteryears who flirted with the various ragas to create melodies that are forever young and their reach eternal.

The young and talented Jasmine Gill and the very versatile Priya Dass had the audience asking for more especially after the very popular Bajirao Mastani number, ‘Pingada Pingada’. The audience were completely besotted by their singing prowess. Some of the other stand-out numbers were ‘Gerua’ from Dilwale and ‘Manvalage’ from Happy New Year.

The audience was taken down memory lane with nostalgic numbers from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and the medley numbers had the audience dancing and clapping in glee. There was a section that was dedicated to mega movie maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali whose movies always have some stand out musical scores. Gul Hora brought to the stage music packaged very differently; with no accompaniments but his guitar, he belted some very popular numbers and finished it with his own from the movie Unindian.

Arun Nanda and Shailja also sang a couple of popular numbers. Aruna Nanda is a very well-known and much loved singer amongst the Sydney music lovers. And in bringing this show he has showcased the local talent in Sydney. This talented team was accompanied by Vivid, a team of very talented musicians who wowed the audience with their performance.

The musical entertainment was interlaced with two very well-choreographed Kathak performances by the students of the Ruchi Sanghi Dance Company—one of them was to the number ‘Mohe Rangdo Lal’ from Bajirao Mastani. The evening was supported by the Gujarati Brahman Samaj. For a maiden venture, Taal Se Taal Mila was a very well thought out program and the selection of songs was not the usual run-of-the-mill. There is no dearth of talent in Sydney and Taal Se Taal Mila was a testament to this. We are all looking forward to more musical treats from the Heart and Soul Events team.
