Dr Raj Khillan is one of the three finalists in the executive male category for IEC Awards. The winner will be announced on 19th November at a Gala dinner in Sofitel
Dr Raj Khillan is a pioneering leader for healthcare in the Indian community and has created a platform for medical professionals of Indian origin. A senior paediatrician with Western and Mercy Health Services, Dr Khillan is the paediatric discipline leader at Melbourne Clinical School, Notre Dame University; holds academic appointments at the University of Melbourne, James Cook University and Flinders University; is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians; and is the current General Secretary for the Overseas Medical Graduates Association (OMGA).
He is an exceptionally qualified professional drawing upon his experiences from India (MBBS, MD), USA (International Fellowship of American Academy of Paediatrics), UK (Fellow of Royal College of Paediatrics and Children’s Health), Australia (Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians), and Switzerland (Membership of the Geneva Foundation of Medical Education and Research). He can speak English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and Arabic, and uses these skills to cater for the social sensitivities of our community.
As the General Secretary of OMGA since 2012, Dr Khillan has increased the member base from 15 to over 1000 members, organising corporate sponsorships with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and the Australian Medical Association. OMGA now hosts regular social events raising awareness on maternal health and more. “These events draw upon a multitude of other cultural organisations within the Indian community,” says Dr Khillan.
In particular, his work in the inception of OMGA’s Continuing Medical Education program is of note and provides education conferences to Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners by highlighting common culturally based healthcare issues. The inaugural conference for Paediatric Health is slated for June 2017.
On a larger scale, Dr Khillan has been a staunch advocate of philanthropic projects in India, collaborating with the Australian South-Asian Healthcare Association Charity (ASHA Charity), providing OMGA’s financial support and medical expertise to project sites in India and Sri Lanka. He has also led fundraising campaigns for the Chennai and Fiji Floods, Nepal Earthquakes and East Timor reconstruction projects, raising a cumulative total of over $30,000 for such projects.
