Reet and Kam Phulwani is one of the three finalists in the medium business category for IEC Awards. The winner will be announced on 19th November at a Gala dinner in Sofitel

Medsurge Healthcare is one of the fastest growing key pharmaceutical companies offering specialised lifesaving medicines to healthcare professionals in Australia and New Zealand.

Medsurge Healthcare was founded in 2007 in Australia and expanded to be registered in New Zealand in 2011. The company began as a wholesale pharmaceutical distribution business, but has recently begun its own brand under the name Medicianz Healthcare Australia and manufactures generic products in Europe for sale across Australia and New Zealand markets. Both Medsurge Healthcare and Medicianz Healthcare Australia are 100% Australian-owned and operated.

Medsurge Healthcare and Medicianz Healthcare Australia were both started by Indian-born Kamlesh (Kam) Phulwani, who migrated from India in 2002 with a pharmacy degree. He started working at major hospitals across Melbourne before starting his own wholesale pharmaceutical company. Started with very little investment, the company touched an annual turnover of $15 million at the end of financial year 2015-2016.

“After working in hospital pharmacies for eight years, I noticed there were lots of medicines missing from pharmacies as the big pharma companies didn’t want to bring them to Australia due to logistics and cost problems. That’s when I decided to bring these niche and lifesaving medicines to Australia,” says Kam. After nine years of trading, the company is among the top 3 specialised pharmaceuticals companies in Australia and NZ.

There are around 1,000 hospital pharmacies and 6,500 retail pharmacies currently serviced by Medsurge. The company is based in Mulgrave (Melbourne, Victoria), with the site fully licensed and approved by the Department of Health. Medicianz Healthcare is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as an Australia drug manufacturer.

Last year, Kam received the Executive of the Year (Male) 2015 award at the Indian Executive Club awards and this year has been shortlisted as a finalist for Businessperson of the Year (Male) at the India Australia Business & Community Awards. Medicianz Healthcare has also been shortlisted as the Finalist for SME of the year at the IABCA.
