Four consultation sessions will be held across Western Sydney to seek local views on concepts for the establishment of a culturally diverse women’s hub, minister for citizenship and communities Victor Dominello announced recently.

Mr Dominello joined with 30 service providers that work with women to attend the first consultation session at Liverpool Catholic Club.

“The NSW Government and Multicultural NSW are keen to find out what role such a hub could play for culturally diverse women and how it might work,” Mr Dominello said.

“These consultations are part of the commitment made in our Harmony in Action plan to support initiatives which “create opportunities for women and girls from culturally diverse backgrounds” and provide women and girls with a voice.

“A specialised hub could help empower women from culturally diverse backgrounds to navigate pathways to education, jobs and small business start-up opportunities.

“NSW takes the lion’s share of new migrants to Australia across the family, skilled and humanitarian visa programs.  Last year 75,000 new migrants arrived in NSW, and a significant number now call western Sydney home.

“Many migrant women are looking to become more civically engaged and this concept is about creating a space to access opportunities.

“A hub could help empower migrant women and offer new skills to help enrich their own lives and the community at large.

“It is about enabling women from culturally diverse backgrounds to meet regularly, as well as linking them with employment, education and volunteering opportunities.”

Mr Dominello said that to be successful in the long-term, such a hub is likely to need community, private and philanthropic support, in partnership with government.

“Through this consultation process we’re enabling local women to have their say in developing the concept.”

Consultation sessions will take place in Liverpool, Bankstown, Granville and Blacktown.
