This year’s theme for Multicultural Health Week (5–11 September) is ‘Caring for Carers: Supporting people who look after someone’.

Apart from the ones in English, brochures on ‘Caring for Carers’ in Hindi have been developed to promote multicultural health week and help Hindi speaking carers access services and resources.

A multilingual video ‘I am a Carer’ has also been developed to raise awareness about the important role of carers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS6sgGnaXXg&feature=youtu.be.

A carer is someone who looks after a family member or friend with disability, mental illness, drug and/or alcohol dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail or aged.

Working carers are people who are in paid employment and also look after a relative or friend who is ill, frail, with disability or is ageing. They can work full-time, part-time, casually or manage their own business. The Working Carers Gateway is a website that offers a variety of resources and information to support your role as a working carer. Visit www.workingcarers.org.au.

Young carers are children or young people up to 25 years of age, who help look after a parent, a sibling, a child or a grandparent, or even other relatives or a friend with disability, mental illness, drug and/or alcohol dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail aged.

Carers NSW (www.carersnsw.org.au) is a non-government organisation that supports and advocates for all carers in NSW and provides referral to services, information and resources for carers and carer support groups, emotional support.

Among the resources for carers are My Aged Care (www.myagedcare.gov.au), a new contact centre for older people, as well as their families and carers to access aged care services. The service provides information about different types of aged care services, costing and eligibility

Carer Gateway (www.carergateway.gov.au) is a national online and phone service that provides practical information and resources to support carers. The interactive service finder helps carers connect to local support services.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
