When the all-abilities cricket association that the Yarraville Club Cricket Club was involved with disbanded in 2015 Hussain Hanif decided it was his turn to pitch in. His efforts paid off and Hanif has now been named Cricket Victoria’s and Cricket Coaches Australia’s Senior Coach of the Year.
Hanif, 31, who is in charge of junior development at the club, registered the players in the Super League (30 overs competitive) and 10 Over Tonk (non-competitive) in the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association simply because he thought it would be a “shame to see the 50 players walk away from the game”. Hanif became coach and oversaw both sides to an undefeated 2016 season with the super league also winning the premiership. The team also won the 2016 State All-Abilities Carnival.
All Hanif wants is the award puts the spotlight on all-abilities cricket and “creates awareness around the need for more sports to cater for people with disabilities”.
“Seeing children with disabilities try cricket means more than runs on the board,” he says.
