Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who was on Forbes `100 Most Powerful Women’ globally list, talks to members about giving business a purpose

The Australia India Business Council hosted a business brunch with Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the founder of India’s leading biotechnology enterprise Biocon and Chair of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, on 7 March at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney. This was specially organised to celebrate International Women’s Day.

AIBC National Vice Chair, Sheba Nandkeolyar introduced the AIBC Women in Business (WIB) team to Ms Mazumdar-Shaw and Australia India Council (AIC) Director and Secretariat Louisa Petralia.

Sheba Nandkeolyar acknowledged and thanked AIC for hosting the brunch in partnership with AIBC WIB and said that AIBC cherishes the relationship with AIC and looks forward to working together on many other such future events. In her introduction to Ms Mazumdar-Shaw, Sheba said, “Kiran was named TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the World’ and also recognised as Forbes `100 Most Powerful Woman’ globally.

Ms Mazumdar-Shaw then shared her story in an informal conversational style which resonated very well with the attendees. “Innovation is key to growing your business and giving your business a purpose is equally important,” said Ms Mazumdar-Shaw.

She spoke about ‘innovation and affordability of products for a billion patients, rather than billion dollars’. She also went on to share a very key idea that all women should be aware of — “You have to be fairly unemotional when taking tough decisions in business. Maintaining focus without getting distracted with every opportunity that comes your way is equally important. And finally, it’s all about building a great team.”

On the occasion of International Women’s day, Mrs Mazumdar-Shaw’s story shines as a guiding light to aspiring entrepreneurial women in their own life journeys.

The brunch was attended by AIBC Victoria Women in Business Chair Div Pillay and AIBC NSW WIB Chair, Claire Tynan, among other prominent AIBC WIB members.
