A reason to celebrate

When November comes around at The Indian Sun, it’s always a time of excitement and not just because it’s a month of festivities but because this is the time of year that the Indian diaspora is celebrated in all its splendour and success.

November is when we publish our annual edition of Who’s Who and host the Indian Executive Club awards night, both of which celebrate the business leaders, philanthropists, and entrepreneurs from the Indian community who have chosen to make Australia their home.

Our Who’s Who this year focuses on the story of migration of these achievers, their tales of how they came Down Under, faced their challenges and struggles head on and carved a name for themselves. Fifty true stories of grit and determination from the ground up. Whether it is creating a flourishing empire out of scrap or making a mark in the world of chocolates and confectioneries these entrepreneurs recount and relive their journeys to a new land.

This year marks the sixth edition of the IEC Awards, Australia’s first event to recognise the achievements of small to medium-sized businesses and executives from the Indian diaspora. Launched in 2011, years after year the awards have shone the spotlight on the rising stars of the community, from impressive young executives taking huge strides up the corporate ladder to top level executives who have over the years powered up their start-ups into world-class businesses.

This year, Sadhana Smiles, Chief Executive Officer of Harcourts Group Victoria, one of only two female CEOs in her sector, which is commonly referred to as the “boy’s club”, will be delivering the keynote address at the IEC Awards on 19 November. Not just a business leader, Sadhana is known for her community work in the area of violence against women.

Chairman of The Good Guys Andrew Muir will be launching the fifth edition of the Who’s Who, our annual publication that celebrates the Indian Diaspora.

In terms of the council polls, one of the most hotly contested council elections we have seen in a while, millionaire property and education entrepreneur and Labor candidate Intaj Khan secured a second term in office in Wyndham council, which he says is a “demonstration” of multicultural Australia.

While incumbent councillor Gautam Gupta lost this time around, with his experience in the council, he ought to get back in the ring and aim for state parliament.

Enjoy your November read.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
