Go snow deep at Falls Creek

The winter season has arrived and there is no greater escape than a trip to Victoria’s snowfields. Falls Creek is best placed for a family adventure with its easy to access village, ski-in, ski-out roads and great options for fun in the snow.

Everybody loves to toboggan, and at Falls Creek there are two slopes dedicated to the sport. Most visitors head to the advanced slope with convenient day parking alongside, but there is also a beginners’ slope with the added fun of a free chairlift ride to get there. Skiing is the main attraction in town but for something different you can try taking a trip into the spectacular back-country. Pick up some snow shoes, rent a fat bike (with wheels built for snow) or strap on some cross country skis. A big highlight for many visitors is taking the controls of a snowmobile to drive to the summit of nearby Mt McKay for a guided sunset tour.

The village is set up with all the comforts of home, including delights from over 35 dining outlets. When catering on a budget there are quick and easy snack stalls and a seven-day supermarket also. The best move is an on-mountain stay where you can choose from communal lodge-style properties to private apartments and hotels. When the snow falls there is nothing like stepping outside to a winter wonderland outside your front door!

Essential Tips:

1. Drive or Bus to the top

Planning to drive? Falls Creek is five hours from Melbourne and free of snow until the last few kms. There is plenty of parking at the resort but it’s a long return so consider staying overnight instead of a day trip. In Mount Beauty you can stop and rent snow chains for your wheels (all vehicles need to carry them!) or take the Park and Ride service for the final climb.

2. Get all the right gear

It’s fine to arrive in street clothes but once in the snow you want to look the part. Suit up in waterproof jacket, pants and boots in the rental outlets to keep your snow time fun and not wet or cold. You need gloves and a beanie too so check out the retail stores to buy these if you forget to pack some from home.

3. Enjoy the Best Snow Fun!

Falls Creek is packed with great fun activities for the whole family, and cheap enough to enjoy on a budget. Slide on our two free toboggan slopes, get fast thrills on the Snow Tube Park, snow-shoe through the alpine landscape or take a free chairlift ride to the heart of the action. Coffee and dining is all alongside for the perfect family outing.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
