Victoria is celebrating the enormous economic contributions small businesses make to the state at the Inaugural World Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Day.
Small business owners, associations, advisors and supporters came together for the global day of celebrations at a breakfast event in Melbourne on 27 June.
The day of recognition is a result of a resolution by United Nations to promote the growth of small businesses and formally acknowledge their importance as major employers.

Victorian Small Business Commissioner Judy O’Connell said the day is a great chance to reiterate the vital role that Victoria’s small businesses play in the economy.
“With more than 550,000 small and 156,000 micro businesses employing more than half of all the state’s private jobs, the value of this sector cannot be overstated,” Ms O’Connell said.
A new three-year business strategy outlining plans for a fairer and more competitive environment for Victoria’s small businesses was launched at the event.
The strategy sees the creation of the Victorian Small Business Commission from 1 July, giving the Victorian Small Business Commissioner broader and stronger functions.
The new Commission will focus on small business community engagement, advocacy, monitoring the small business environment and providing dispute resolution.
Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade Philip Dalidakis welcomed the increased emphasis on Victoria’s small businesses.
“Small businesses account for 97 per cent of the state’s businesses so it’s crucial they have access to the right tools, information and protection so they can grow and create more jobs for Victorians,” Mr Dalidakis said.
